The times, they are a changin. AMD introduced its lineup of Athlon 64-bit processors almost a year ago. They were tempting speed-demons capable of performing both 64-bit and 32-bit processes. Basically, this meant you could upgrade to a 64-bit processor without having to wait for the 64-bit version of Windows to be released. All the benefits of forward-compatibility without any of the negatives of having to rebuy all your software packages. Great! Why didn't they catch on? The mighty dollar struck again and all of the new 64-bit hardware was just too expensive.
Well, a year really makes a difference in the computer industry. First, prices have dropped significantly from last year, making 64-bit computers a feasible of reality for us little folk. In addition, ASUS and Nvidia got their acts together after releasing a dismal nForce3 150Gb motherboard and released this -- the K8N-E Deluxe nForce3 250Gb.
This socket 754 (most AMD Athlon 64 Processors are socket 754 however the newest of the new is socket 939 now) motherboard comes loaded for bear with everything you could possible need for today's multimedia machine.

Let's start with I/O devices. You've got your PS/2 connectors for ancient keyboards and mice. For those of you not living in the Dark Ages, the motherboard comes with eight (8) USB2.0 ports and a built-on IEEE1394 (firewire) port with the ability to add an expansion slot with yet another firewire port.

That's fine, but there are a whole lot of other ports here that do nifty stuff; let's talk about Realtek's ALC850 8-channel onboard sound with BOTH coaxial and optical digital-out as well as standard speaker outputs. Even Creative Labs' Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS doesn't come with SPDIF (optical) out. And the Sound Manager program handles all of the adjustments and configuration issues for any speaker system available with expert ease. The sound quality is absolutely superb.

For hard drive support, you've got your standard two IDE channels capable of each handling two drives (overall support for four drives). In addition, you also get six (6) Serial ATA controllers. Yes, that's right, I said SIX. Two of which are controlled by the BIOS itself with the remaining four controlled by the spectacular onboard Sil 3114 controller chip.

ASUS didn't stop there, though. They decided to throw in gigabit ethernet. Yep, no 10/100 Ethernet for this monster, you've got the ugpradability of 10/100/1000 Ethernet.

As far as stability goes, this motherboard runs like a champ. We've even run some performance numbers for you on the very system being used to write this review:

The original specs of this PC were as follows: an Athlon XP 2600+ processor running on an ASUS A7N8X2.0-Deluxe motherboard (check out our review by clicking here) with 1024MB of matched pair Mushkin Level-One memory running with RAID-0 Western Digital 36.7GB Raptor hard drives (for a combined 20,000RPM and 16MB of cache) and a Powercolor ATI Radeon 9700 Pro video card. The PCMark2001 results looked like this:

The only components changed were the motherboard and the processor. Everything else remained the same for the following PCMark2001 results:

Granted, the CPU Score is completely dependent on the new Athlon 64 3200+ chip we threw down but the rest are completely motherboard-determined. Performance increases by just changing out the motherboard and processor looked like this:

Yes, the time has come for 64-bit processing despite the fact that the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows XP isn't due until later this year or early 2005. The ASUS K8N-E Deluxe motherboard is spectacular bringing faster overall performance to every aspect of computer use. How to Install a Motherboard

The process of replacing the motherboard began with removing the old motherboard. Now it's time to compare the old motherboard with the replacement motherboard to see how the physically match. I've pulled the I/O core shield out of the back of the case, and I've placed it on the I/O core of the old motherboard. You can see (if the flash isn't blinding you:-) that the old I/O core didn't have a game port or integrated sound, which the new motherboard supports. New motherboards should always ship with their own I/O shield, but with a second-hand replacement like we're using here, you have to make due. Fortunately, the old I/O shield has punch-outs in the proper locations.

ASUS P5K/EPU new motherboard

This new motherboard is announced to officially support 1600 FSB. Strange behaviour when intel only guaranty it offcially on the X48 upcoming chipset. It also includes the EPU technology available on last X38 high end cards and on the P5K Pro. There's no more info on this card, nor it seems to be yet released.
As I can see from the shots, it is 8 phase power, but the 4 up phases can't be cooled as there's no holes to fit any heatsink. Also the ATX 12v power connector is only 4 pins instead of 8 pins

The most interesting is to see how the P35 platform is still developped with new motherboards, just 4 weeks before X48 release, while the X38 plateform is still freezed. Hopefully, ASUS will continue to update the P35 bioses for a while. But the most strange is that these new P35 boards look really as the low end segment cards

New Motherboard ATX systems

# Hole 'A' is elongated (oval). And its center may vary as much as 0.5".

# Hole 'N' on the Baby-AT and Full-AT motherboards does not line up perfectly with holes 'A' and 'G'. It is 0.25" closer to the edge of the motherboard than the other two holes.

# Hole 'B', which was required on previous specifications, is considered optional by the ATX 2.01 spec for ATX and Mini-ATX chassis.

# Hole 'F', which was optional on previous specifications, is required by ATX spec 2.01 for ATX chassis.

# ATX motherboards have a PS/2 mouse and PS/2 keyboard connector built into the board. The serial ports, parallel port, and any USB ports are also built in. The AT board only has the 5-pin AT keyboard connector built in. The rest attach with cables to various headers on the mainboard and are usually mounted to an expansion slot plate on the back of the computer.

# The 20-pin ATX connector is keyed so it can only be inserted into the socket one way. It is sometimes difficult to fully seat the ATX power connector. Try not to flex the board too much when inserting it.

# The momentary button on the front of the case that powers on the system is supposed to be connected to the motherboard. Unlike AT-style systems, it isn't directly connected to the power supply. Because the ATX motherboard is not physically disconnected from the P/S by the power switch, the motherboard can enter power down mode and be brought back up in a short amount of time. The main shutoff switch is almost always in the back of the power supply, although this feature is becoming more and more scarce with newer units. But holding down the front power switch for a few seconds will also shut off the machine (assuming things are setup that way in the BIOS). Some BIOSes allow an ATX momentary switch to act like an AT power switch and immediately shut off the computer. But the ATX power supply still needs to be attached to the motherboard and not directly to the On/Off switch.

# Do not insert any components while the ATX power supply is still plugged in. The ATX P/S constantly supplies juice to the motherboard, and components can be damaged if upgrading while the P/S is still plugged in.

# Beware of ATX power supplies that are not ATX 2.01 compliant. Some newer motherboards won't power up if the P/S doesn't conform. Some power supplies will also not come on if there is no draw from a floppy or hard drive in addition to the motherboard. This may vary from P/S to P/S. Although I believe this only applies to AT power supplies. And, no, I don't know why I stuck this observation on the ATX page. :-P

# There is a new ATX power supply specification (0.9) that drastically increases the amperage spec for the 3.3 volt line on the power supply. I believe the old spec was for 14 amps for a 300 watt supply. It is now 28 amps for a 300 watt supply because of the possibility of running two amperage hungry chips in a dual configuration.

# According to the ATX specification, the fan on ATX power supply is intended to blow in over the CPU to allow for cooling. This isn't because this is necessarily the best solution for cooling a hot processor. It's mostly a cost saving measure. In most of the older Pentium systems, Intel recommends a dedicated fan in the front blowing in from the bottom of the case (if it's a Mini/Mid/Tower) and the power supply fan at the top back of the case blowing out. A decent airflow should develop. Atleast that's the idea. But you'll have to figure out what the best thermal solution for your particular situation is. Because what seems like a logical solution to a cooling problem (such as adding an additional fan), can actually have unintended consequences. See FloTherm for an example. In the end, a heatsink with the ATX power supply blowing over the heatsink fins may be all you need.

# While ATX is a standard, there are many different styles of I/O backplates available. Be sure that you get the right one to fit the port connectors on the back of your mainboard. See Shuttle's page of backplates for some of the variants.

# Some cases (like my InWin Q500) can take many different styles of boards. Some can only take one or two. An ATX case which can accept AT motherboards should have a backplate for the AT keyboard's 5-pin DIN connector to stick through.

# Most Pentium-II based systems (even ones from OEMs) are ATX. Motherboards based on the 440EX chipset come almost exclusively in the Micro-ATX format, though there may be a few exceptions.

# Micro-ATX specifies up to 4 expansion slots (usually 2 PCI and 2 ISA). MicroATX also allows for a smaller power supply (SFX) that has the same motherboard connector as an ATX P/S, but takes up less space.

# Holes 'R' and 'S' on the Micro-ATX board are not standard on regular ATX cases, and the front left of the motherboard may not be supported at all. Using a standoff with adhesive on the bottom or a rubber bumper to support the board is suggested. Although the bumper will only help support ISA cards when they're inserted, and not when they're removed.

# In order to help with feeding newer more powerful CPUs their required amperage draws, a new ATX power supply standard: ATX12V has been developed. This new power supply lessens the required amperage rating on the 3.3v line and transfers much of the amperage draw to an auxilliary 4-pin plug. This extra plug is required alongside the traditional 20-pin ATX power plug for Pentium 4 motherboards. While the ATX12V standard is intended to be backwards compatible, it may pose some problems for other CPUs that draw a good deal of amperage, but whose boards don't use the new plug. This includes some of the very high power draw Athlon processors, and in particular dual Athlon systems. These may require a different power supply altogether. So changing between Intel and AMD systems using the same P/S may now be more difficult. Beware of this possible snafu. AMD has a list of compatible power supplies on their website.

# There may be an auxilliary connector (P2) on your ATX power supply that resembles an old AT-style 6-pin plug. This is used on some server motherboards. If your board has a plug for this power connector, use it. Don't confuse this P2 connector with the 22-pin P2 connector for WTX power supplies.

# There may be an extra 6-pin plug (Aux - 2x3 configuration) on your ATX power supply. This is for fan monitoring, IEEE-1394 (Firewire) power supply, and remote 3.3v sense.

AMD new motherboard standard

AMD, which is based in California, unveiled the new open standard, called DTX, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

DTX will work with both AMD and rival Intel processors and will allow manufacturers of smaller motherboards to easily configure parts from different companies.
AMD hopes the move will reverse the declining market for desktop computers by producing products that appeal to consumers.

"Desktop purchases are on the decline as notebooks rise," AMD's Leslie Sobon told CBC News Online at the CES on Thursday.
We're thinking we should redefine what a desktop is," said Sobon, the director of product and brand management for AMD's desktop division.

"There's part of the market that wants a sleek look and feel but also wants the performance and upgradeability of a desktop."

And most desktops still have motherboards that operate using a standard laid out in 1995 by Intel called ATX, which stands for Advanced Technology Extended. ATX was designed to allow everything from memory cards to mouse ports to have a standardized spot alongside the central processing unit on a typical desktop motherboard.

While there have been other standards since, ATX remains the most common standard for desktops, though its design is not suited for smaller, more energy-efficient desktops, AMD said.

"The DTX standard will be designed to embrace energy-efficient processors from AMD or other hardware vendors, and allow an optimally designed small form factor system to consume less power and generate less noise," the company said in a release Thursday.

"When processor power consumption is reduced, system size and cooling costs can also go down. Energy efficient processors can also help extend the longevity of PCs, while offering consumer and business users a quiet, more pleasant experience in their offices or living rooms."

The company hopes a universal standard for smaller motherboards will get manufacturers interested in producing the different components for the machines.

"This works to the benefit of everybody," said Sobon.

Earlier this week AMD launched Better by Design, a platform brand designed to compete with Intel's Centrino brand.

Motherboard Installation

Pop-out the pre-installed connector plate on the rear of the case and replace it with the one that came with your new motherboard.

Onto the motherboard. You need to determine where you're going to mount the board. As you can see, there are many locations to attach screws on this motherboard tray. The mounting locations coincide with screw holes on the motherboard.

First mount the standoff screws on the tray. These screws separate the motherboard from the metal casing. Sometimes these require special tools, so check ahead of time to make sure you have the right stuff.

Fasten the motherboard by starting in the center and then corners.

First, open your computer case. Some computers have a button or buttons that you press to open the box. Some have screws on the rear of the case which must be removed. I just need to remove the screws on the back of the case.

The new motherboard is going to be mounted onto the motherboard tray. Some computers have removable trays, but for our example we re going to use this embedded tray.
